Georgian Gambit
I'm deeply dissapointed at the fact that Russia has recognized the independence of S. Ossetia and Abkhazia. These republics definitely deserve freedom, but it brings no benefits to Russia. It seems that the US have sacrified these two small peace of land to get the following:
- Georgia resolves it territorial problems, so that it is accepted to NATO and packed with western military bases.
- Russian reputation is spoilt, and its enemies have many opportunities for scaring their people and other nations with the "monster" to gain political dividents.
- The separatism risk in Russia increases, as possible breakaway republics will use S. Ossetia and Abkhazia as examples in the arguments with the Kremlin.
- Russian economy is under threat, as European countries will search for new energy sources, limit their investments on the Russian capital market, and impose sanctions on Russian goods. Russia looses the chance to enter the WTO, as Georgia is the only country that has signed a mutual agreement with Russia.
- India and China won't support Russia to avoid separtism risks in their countries.
The Great Game is terrible. Russians are members of the European family, and it's madness to create artificial barriers and conflicts. Happiness of people is the last thing popliticians think about here.

It seems like in this world is happenning smthing what we dont know, and even can't guess. And be honest, i'm getting scared...
Why did Medvedev do it? I don't understand. The parliament has passed the resolution. Isn't it strong enough? Isn't it symbolic enough? This was the perfect PR opportunity for Medvedev to extend an olive branch to the world -- "Despite the unaminous vote from the parliament, the government of Russian Federation is willing to postpone our recognition and work with the international community." This gesture will put you above Georgia. This gesture will elevate Medvedev above Sakshivilli, in the eyes of western media. Why ruin this perfect PR opportunity!
The story doesn't end there. A confrontational Russia is exactly what the Republicans need to put McCain in the White House! With 10 points trailing McCain in national security, Medvedev is further eroding Obama's chance of landing in the White House. WHY! Why give the White House to someone who is more likely to actually start a war with Russia? Medvedev said he is not afraid of a war, whether cold or hot, but the war will be fought on the Russian soil, not American soil. Russian civilians will perish, regardless of Russian victory or American victory. Russian economy will suffer more than American economy, as US will finance its war via People's Bank of China, and Russia will have to turn on its printing machine. Has someone in Krelim questioned this ill thought through gesture by Medvedev?
A hostile Russia brings the reality of a much feared gang of four -- McCain, Miliband, Merkel, Sarkozy. Is this the international order that we want to live through for the next 10 years? As a proud Democrat, my party has worked so hard together to bring an end to the Bush presidency. The last thing I want to see Obama lost on the national security debate. As Hillary put it, we don't want 4 more years of last 8 years. Why is Medvedev supporting McCain??!!
